Is There Aluminum in Your Deodorant/Antiperspirant and Why You Should Be Concerned?

Aluminum is a Toxin! Don't rub another product on your skin until you read the below information!

The problem with deodorants and antiperspirants is not only the aluminum, but how it works to reduce sweat and smelly odors. At one time we all thought this was a good thing but then we found out that it is locking poisons in!!

We live in a world where the products that we use on a daily basis are actually laden with some of the most toxic chemicals on the planet.

Studies are now showing that continuous exposure to toxic chemicals in personal hygiene products, such as antiperspirants, may be related to allergic reactions, Alzheimer’s, and even breast cancer in women. This may come as no surprise considering the fact that most deodorants are made up of aluminum chlorohydrate, as well as up to 20 other toxic chemicals.

Similarly, a recent study from Reading University found that cancerous tumors are most likely to appear in the parts of the female breast which is closest to where antiperspirants are applied. Of the women studied, it was found that cysts in the armpit area of the breast had 25x more aluminum than the common amount found in blood.

The use of antiperspirant deodorant formulas has been subject to a lot of controversy due to the aluminum base and paraben (these are chemicals used as preservatives). Aluminum compounds, particularly aluminum chlorohydrate, are easily absorbed through the skin and have been linked with higher risks of Alzheimer's.

Some deodorants will be labeled aluminum-free, but still contain propylene glycol, a common solvent in toothpastes, deodorant, mouthwash, and other personal care items, that is a penetration enhancer and best to avoid. Another kind of ingredient in deodorants and anti-perspirants that may contribute to breast cancer are hormone-disruptive parabens. Propylene Glycol has been known to cause allergic and toxic reactions.

You should use deodorant instead of antiperspirant, since sweat is normal and blocking the pores is not. Especially avoid aluminum. With deodorants, avoid phthalates (for more information on phthalates, see my article What are Phthalates), which are plastics used to help the fragrance stay on our skin and block endocrine function, especially in the male fetus. Parabens, which are used as preservatives in these products, should also be avoided since they could be linked to breast cancer.

Be cautious of "natural" deodorant crystals as they may contain aluminum, and would therefore not be something you would want to use. Even if you think you are safe because you are buying your deodorant in a health store or because it says natural, think again! Read the labels.

We all know that good personal hygiene is important but you may want to switch to a personal care product that does not contain aluminum hydroxide. It may take some time to find a product that works for you, but why chance your health. If you feel you need extra for dryness, try powder that is Talc Free and Paraben Free.
