Do You Really Want to Feed Your Dog Beneful?

As I was checking out of BJ Warehouse, I looked look over to the other lane to see a couple with a 50 lb. bag of Beneful -- a bag of poison!!  This food is anything but balanced and nutritious.  It is loaded with carcinogens, dead/diseased animals, antifreeze and nothing but fillers. There is absolutely no nutritional value to this food.

Is It Worth It?
I understand that some people, due to financial situations, are on a budget. But, consider the cost of your pet's health and or life by buying this bottom of the barrel food. Purina is currently being sued because of all the pet's that have become ill or died from Beneful.   Please reconsider the next time you are ready to buy your dog food.

Beneful Ingredients:
Ingredients: Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols, beef, rice flour, soy flour, meat and bone meal, propylene glycol, sugar, salt, phosphoric acid, mono and dicalcium phosphate, animal digest, potassium chloride, tricalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), non-fat yogurt, dried carrots, dried peas, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, l-lysine monohydrochloride, vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, red 40, niacin, vitamin A supplement, yellow 5,yellow 6, copper sulfate, vitamin B12 supplement, calcium pantothenate,blue 2, thiamine mononitrate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite
The only real meat in this food is beef that is so far down in the ingredients and pure beef is 80% water and only about 15-20% real meat.  Not much meat for your pet.
Corn, wheat, gluten, soy has very little nutrition value for your pet and are high allergens.  I meet more pets now that have have allergies.  Corn is also very susceptible to molds and toxins.  Animal digest Animal digest is a chemically hydrolyzed mixture of animal by-products that is typically sprayed onto the surface of a dry kibble to improve its taste. The artificial colors in the food are for you -- it's all marketing.  Your pet doesn't know what color their food is.  Dog food should be a brown color.  Menadione is linked to liver toxicity, allergies and the abnormal break-down of red blood cells. Propylene Glycol is the cousin to antifreeze and why does your dog need sugar.  Dogs can become addicted to sugar the same as humans can.   Sugar feeds cancer.  This is a below average dog food with very little, if any, nutritional value for your pet.

Are You Really Saving Money?
In the short term you may be saving money but in the long-term at what cost to your pet.  How many pets end up with kidney disease, cancer, seizures and other health problems.  Have you ever considered it might be from the food?
Purina is currently being sued over Beneful because of all the pets becoming ill or worse, dying.  Are they really concerned about your pet's health or is it about money?

In The News:

Just because a company has been around for a very long time, doesn't mean that your pet's health is first and foremost.  If it was, would Beneful and some of their other products still be on the shelves?

The Advertisement and The Reality of Pet Food!

This is the ingredient list of a pet food used by many people.  The images on the bag and the benefits listed all portray that this is balanced and healthy for your pet when the opposite is true.
Where's the beef?? Did you find it?
There is so little real meat in this food. Beef Meal is so far down in the ingredient list. The top ingredients are low quality ingredients. The advertisement is very different from the reality.

The Reality:
Corn, soybean, wheat are all very common allergens, are hard for your pet to digest and provides incomplete proteins for carnivores. These ingredients can also disturb the immune system. Not to mention these ingredients, especially corn, are very susceptible to molds and toxins!!
Sugar in the form of High Fructose Corn Syrup!!! There is no need for sugar in your pet's food. They can become addicted to that sugar just like humans can. And the pretty colors in the pet food -- that's for you -- not the dog!! That artificial color added to your pet food -- the dyes -- have been linked to many health conditions -- including cancer!
Propylene Glycol -- the cousin to antifreeze. It's used to ensure a longer shelf life but could shorten your pet's life!!! This is the ingredient that Purina is being sued over.
Menadione can weaken your pet's immune system and potentially cause toxic reactions in the liver cells.
By-Products are what's left over that we are usually throwing in the garbage.  Animal by-products are simply cheaper… notably cheaper than most any other comparable meat product. They’re used for making dog food because they save money. Not because they’re more nutritious.

Summary:

None of these ingredients will help your pet thrive and live a healthy, long life.  The reason foods, with these ingredients, are so inexpensive are because they are using inferior ingredients and that equals inferior quality.  You could end up spending so much more in vet bills.

Email me at healthyproducts4pets@gmail.com to get the full list of low quality ingredients that includes What It Is, Why It Is Used and What's Wrong With It.

Propylene Glycol in Your Pet Food

Does your pet product contain Propylene Glycol?  Propylene Glycol is the ingredient Purina is being sued over.   Propylene Glycol is the cousin to anti-freeze!!!!  Woooo...  Do you want to be giving your pet anti-freeze?

Why Is It Used?

Propylene Glycol helps preserve the moisture content in some commercial dog foods.

Banned in Cat Food!

Propylene Glycol has been banned in cat food so why is it still ok to use in dog food?  It was banned because of its proven ability to cause a serious type of blood disease in some animals — Heinz body anemia — propylene glycol has been banned by the FDA for use in cat food.

In small doses, possibly this might be safe for your pet.  However, any chemical ingested or applied on a daily basis, becomes toxic.  Because of this, pet owners should consider the potential long-term consequences of giving your pet products with Propylene Glycol in the ingredient.

Foods that Contain Propylene Glycol:
  • Kibble Select Complete (Dry)
  • Tomboy Dog Food (Dry)
  • Dad’s Kibble Select Complete (Dry)
  • Purina Healthy Morsels (Dry)
  • Bruiser Dog Food (Dry)
  • Purina Be Happy Dog Food (Dry)
  • Beneful Dog Food (Dry)
  • Kibbles ‘n Bits Bistro Meals (Dry)
  • Purina Active Senior 7 Plus (Dry)
  • Kibbles ‘n Bits (Dry)

Chicken vs. Chicken Meal in Pet Food

For the purpose of this blog, I'll be using chicken for my example.

Chicken has been considered by many pet owners as the superior ingredient to chicken meal.  But is it really?   That was what I had thought.   Is the first ingredient in your pet food chicken?

The chicken is basically taking a roaster and grinding it up and that could include muscle, skin and bones.  The water content average, however, is around 70-80%, fat about 5% and the rest protein at only about 15%.  You are paying for water as your first ingredient and your pet is getting very little protein.  This also lowers the nutrient dense content of the food so the serving size would be more.

Chicken meal, on the other hand, is the chicken but with the water removed so that it is only about 10-20% water and the rest is protein.  It can come in a lot of different qualities.  It can have a lot of bone or a little bone. Life's Abundance chicken is the best quality that you can buy.  Our chicken meal is a very digestible protein and it has a high biological value.  Life's Abundance chicken meal is the breast meat and thigh meat.

Low Quality Meat Meal:

You do want to avoid anonymous meat meals and ingredients with the following:

  1. Includes the words “by-products” in its name
  2. Fails to identify the specific source animal
Here are some examples of inferior meat-based protein ingredients. Notice the generic nature of the phrases:
  • Meat meal
  • Animal meal
  • Chicken by-product meal
  • Meat and bone meal
  • Glandular meal
  • Poultry meal
  • Blood meal
Summary:

Pound for pound, chicken meal will provide more nutrients and protein than chicken.

How Is Your Pet Food Sold?

Things To Considers Before Buying Your Pet Food!
This may not appear to be important on the surface but it is vitally important in knowing whether or not you are buying a quality product. Most pet foods are sold through either grocery or pet food stores. This presents a few challenges that cannot be overlooked.

Inadequate Education:
Buying your pet food from a store often times leaves you just as much “in the dark” about your choices as when you walked in. Can you really expect a retail store to offer an expert analysis on all of the pet foods they carry? Most of the time you are directed to the food that is on sale or the one that most people are buying.

Outdated Food:
Try this simple test. Go to any pet store and start checking expiration dates on the bags of pet food. Chances are you will find many pet foods that are set to expire in the very near future. You will also notice that most every pet food has a two year shelf life. Why is that? Does this mean that pet food companies are expecting their foods to be on the market two full years before they are purchased? Would you rather buy a fresh bag of food or one that is two years old?
Life’s Abundance is NOT sold in stores and therefore is not subject to the dictates of the commercial market place. We only make the best formula’s for your pet, price it accordingly, and educate our customers. We also deliver the freshest product in the industry which provides higher nutrition, and safety.  Our foods are made in small batches daily and are delivered fresh to your door being ONLY 4-6 weeks old.

Who Makes Your Pet's Food?
You might be surprised to learn who is in the Pet Food Business today. The same companies that make many of your household items like toothpaste, potato chips, laundry detergent, candy, chocolates and more, are also making the majority of pet foods in the commercial marketplace.
Dr. Jane is dedicated to the creation and advancement of the purest pet products she can make and has a mission to help pets live a longer, healthier, happier life.  We specialize in pet products!! Her food is carefully made every couple of days and is quickly and carefully shipped to your home within weeks of manufacturing. The ingredients are routinely inspected for safety and are purchased from strict, reliably consistent sources.

Why Are There So Many Varieties?
Have you ever asked yourself, "If pet food companies are concerned about providing the best nutrition possible, why do they make differently priced products?
That's a fair question and one that deserves a fair answer.
If two foods that are made by the same company are marketed and sold as 100% nutritionally complete and balanced for your pet, yet one is more expensive than the other, what's the difference? If both pet foods are of equal quality there is no need to spend money on the higher priced food, right? But if both pet foods are not of the same quality, then we have to question the nutritional benefits of each food!
While we understand most people want to watch their budgets and not spend more than is necessary, we also understand that you get what you pay for. Most people never consider that buying cheaper foods can lead to more expenses down the road with regard to vet costs, nutritionally related ailments, and shortened life spans. They may also not realize that it often takes twice the serving size of a cheaper food to equal one serving of Life's Abundance, which eliminates any perceived cost benefit.

Our Philosophy:
Our philosophy is simple!  People who love their pets want to feed what is best, not what is cheapest!
