So let's break down the ingredients.
Ingredients:
Ground wheat, corn gluten meal, wheat flour, ground yellow corn, water, sugar, glycerin, meat, hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, bacon fat preserved with BHA, soybean meal, salt, sorbic acid (a preservative), artificial smoke flavor, calcium propionate (a preservative), glyceryl monostearate, phosphoric acid, choline chloride, added color (red 40, yellow 5, blue 1, yellow 6). Wheat, corn gluten meal, wheat flour are all high allergens for pets and are poorly digested. These ingredients can also disturb the immune system functions. If your pet has allergies, you have to consider everything that your pet is being fed. That includes not only their food but also treats and any supplements. Corn is very susceptible to molds and toxins as well as another high allergen for your pet. These ingredients are considered fillers and usually found in low end foods and treats.
Sugar in pet food and treats!! Why?? Sugar makes the food or treats more palatable. Your dog can also have a sweet tooth and become addicted to sugar.
BHA and BHT is a known carcinogen and banned in many countries. It's used as a preservative and is a less expensive preservative alternative to natural preservatives.
Soybean meal is another common allergen and an inaccessible source of protein for dogs and cats.
Artificial flavors and colors/dyes - your pet doesn't know what color the treat is. Coloring is an attempt to make the treat or food more appealing to the pet owner. Dyes have been linked with health conditions ranging from mild to severe, including cancer.
I hope this makes you stop and think before buying this treat again for your dog.
Just because a company has been around for a long time, ask yourself if their goal is what is best for your pet or what is best for their bottom line.
I will be spending more time analyzing different foods and treats. If there is a food or treat you would like more information on, contact me.
